At Dreams for Change, impact is measurable. Families stabilize. Individuals move into housing. Workers secure employment. Tax refunds return critical dollars back into households that need them most.
But the real strength of this work lives in the people who make it happen.
Right now, tax season is in full swing. What begins with five full time staff quickly expands across San Diego and into El Centro. Temporary site coordinators step in. Evenings run long. Returns are reviewed carefully because every dollar matters. Behind each completed return is a team member who understands that this refund may mean rent, groceries, or a working car.
Our Workforce program continues to grow as well. For many, the Dreams’ Cuisine food truck is an entry point. It is showing up on time, learning teamwork, building confidence, and gaining real work experience in a supportive environment.
From there, new pathways open.
Workforce now offers opportunities to move into human services careers. Participants take lived experience and apply it to roles helping others. Some of our trainees have gone on to become Case Managers, Program Managers, and Site Support staff, both within Dreams for Change and at other nonprofits across San Diego. What begins as support can grow into leadership.
Food Distribution, powered by one dedicated employee working alongside volunteers, ensures nutritious food reaches the pantries of local families. It is steady, coordinated, and deeply personal work.
Across Safe Parking and Safe Sleeping, Site Patrol, Site Support staff, Case Managers, Housing Navigators, and Program Coordinators show up every day. They listen without judgment. They navigate complex systems. They open gates before sunrise and respond to late night concerns. They carry stories with care.
Today, more than 130 team members across programs help create environments rooted in dignity, stability, and opportunity.
And we cannot forget our volunteers. Though unpaid, their contribution is essential. They support tax sites, serve meals, bag food, and stand alongside staff in meaningful ways.
Staff appreciation is about recognizing the steady commitment, emotional labor, and quiet dedication that rarely makes headlines but changes lives every day.
