Finding Home: A Journey for our Veteran Older Adult Homeless Couples

Karina Santos, MPH

For many older adult homeless couples and veterans, finding stable housing can be a challenging journey. They face unique obstacles, including health issues, limited income, and a lack of affordable housing options. Despite these challenges, there is hope. With the right support and resources, these individuals can find the housing they deserve.

They struggled to find a place to stay and often had to rely on safe sleeping. With the help of Dreams for Change, they were connected with our housing navigator who specifically focuses on the rehousing of older adults. Today, Lena and Don have a stable place to call home, where they can age with dignity and security.

Finding housing is just the first step for older adult homeless couples and veterans. Once they have a place to call home, they need ongoing support to maintain their housing and address any other needs they may have. This includes access to healthcare, mental health services, and financial assistance. With the right support, older adult homeless couples and veterans can find stability and security in their housing, allowing them to focus on rebuilding their lives.

As a community, we must continue to support and advocate for programs and resources that help older adult homeless couples and veterans find housing. Every individual deserves a place to call home, and together, we can make that a reality for those who have served our country and those entering their golden years.
