Dreams for Change is honored to play a leadership role in Thrive San Diego – an effort sponsored by United Way of San Diego County and the County of San Diego – to support low- and moderate-income San Diegans with access to income, help with achieving financial stability, and access to food.
Thrive San Diego recognizes that many lower-income and working class Americans do not access tax-credits and other benefits to which they are entitled. For most, this is either because they are unaware that they are eligible for these benefits or, because they do not know how to properly fill out the paperwork that is required to obtain them.
When these households forgo this income, they jeopardize their financial security and their health. Having a financial cushion can often mean the difference between maintaining a home and being homeless.
Since 2010 through Thrive San Diego, Dreams for Change and the organizations it supports have:
- Prepared the annual tax returns of 4300 households at no cost, netting an average return of $2,000
- Assisted 1505 households screened for CalFresh (Food Stamps) and other potential benefits
Thrive San Diego partners include The Earned Income Tax Coalition, United Way of San Diego, and San Diego County Health and Human Services which enables the program reach more low income families across San Diego County.
Free tax preparation is available for households earning less than $55,000.
