Dreams for Change understands that an individual’s vehicle is often their last and most important asset. A vehicle allows people to access resources, look for employment (or get to and from a job) and/or get to and from school.
The loss of a vehicle is seen as one of the final steps to chronic homelessness. We focus on stopping the downward spiral of homelessness by bringing stability to families and individuals who are living in their vehicles.
We recognize that one of the biggest challenges facing people who live in their vehicles is finding a dependable and safe place to park at night. The city of San Diego and surrounding communities have strict laws regulating overnight parking on city streets which limits the available options.
The Safe Parking Program operated by Dreams for Change provides just that — a safe parking environment as well as supportive services for transitional homeless people who are living in their vehicles.
Our family advocates construct an action plan with each participant that places an emphasis on permanent housing solutions, employment, training, emergency support, asset stabilization and asset building. The intervention model we use draws upon work developed by the Center for Working Families®.
Dreams for Change operates two parking sites throughout the county serving 70 families and individuals each evening.
